In 1934, the British actor Lauri Wylie's sketch Dinner for One premiered in London and was to become the most famous of his dramatic creations. The short play consists of a situation that emerges from the language of pure comedy. It's about an old woman who, in the Wizard of the North's version, celebrates her one hundred and ten birthday in the sole company of her butler, who lives with her, and offers an illusionary dinner to four deceased male friends whom she has outlived. The butler pours wine for the four absent guests as if they were present, and interprets them one by one as they toast the birthday girl's health. The result is that her behaviour, in movement and words, shows a progressive drunkenness as she drinks for four.
The occasion for an irresistible stage duet, Dinner for One is therefore, in addition to the parody produced by the theatrical game between mistress and servant, who pretend not to be alone but in the company of the mistress's dead friends, also an amusement that reminds us, through the relief of laughter, of the loneliness of the elderly, of the memory of affection, and of the other side of longevity (which consists in witnessing and surviving the death of loved ones) in our society, which is increasingly in need of finding decent ways of welcoming and integrating the exponentially growing elderly population.
A theatre play directed by Ricardo Neves-Neves and performed by Élvio Camacho and Paula Erra.
